Thymosin alpha-1 is a 28-amino-acid peptide originally isolated from thymus tissue, and it is an approved medicine in dozens of countries. It is not approved in the United States, which is the split that makes it unusual in this category.

That combination — real approvals abroad, none domestically — means it has a genuine clinical evidence base while still being sold as a research chemical in the US market.

Approval status is jurisdictional. Approved elsewhere is not approved here, and material sold as research-grade thymosin alpha-1 is outside any regulated supply chain regardless of what regulators in other countries have decided about the pharmaceutical product.

What it does

Thymosin alpha-1 is an immunomodulator rather than an immune stimulant, a distinction worth holding onto. It affects T-cell maturation and function and influences the balance of immune signalling rather than simply turning activity up.

The thymus produces it naturally, and thymic function declines substantially with age — which is the observation behind much of the interest, in the same way declining levels drive interest in NAD+ and GHK-Cu.

Not the same as thymosin beta-4

This is the most common confusion, and the names invite it. Thymosin alpha-1 and thymosin beta-4 are different peptides with different sequences and unrelated proposed functions.

Where the clinical evidence sits

  • Hepatitis B and C, the indications underpinning many of its approvals.

  • Immune support in oncology, as an adjunct, which is where much of the current literature is focused.

  • Sepsis and severe infection, studied with mixed results.

  • Vaccine response, in populations with impaired immune function.

The pattern across these is that thymosin alpha-1 is studied in people whose immune function is already compromised. Extending that to immune "enhancement" in healthy people is an inference the research does not make.

Storage

Frequently asked questions

Is thymosin alpha-1 approved in the US?

No. It has approvals in many other countries, which is a different thing and does not make US-sold research material a regulated pharmaceutical.

Is it the same as TB-500?

No. Different peptide, different sequence, different proposed function. Only the "thymosin" prefix is shared.

Does it boost the immune system?

It is described as a modulator rather than a stimulant, and the clinical research is largely in people with impaired immune function rather than healthy ones.
