Semax vs. Selank: Two Russian Peptides That Are Not Interchangeable
Semax and Selank are constantly discussed together because they share an origin story, not a mechanism. One derives from ACTH, the other from an immune peptide, and the difference shows.

Semax and Selank share a history, not a mechanism. Both were developed in Russia, both are approved there and nowhere in the US, EU, or UK, and both are commonly sold as nasal sprays. Beyond that they are different molecules doing different things.
Semax derives from ACTH — the adrenocorticotropic hormone fragment 4-10. Selank derives from tuftsin, an immune-system peptide. That difference in origin is reflected in what each is studied for.
Approved in Russia, not in the West. Neither has an approved indication in the US, EU, or UK. Russian approval reflects a different regulatory framework and evidence standard, and most of the supporting literature is published in Russian and not widely replicated internationally.

Semax
Semax is an analogue of a short ACTH fragment, modified so it does not carry the hormonal activity of full ACTH. Research reports effects on brain-derived neurotrophic factor expression and on gene expression related to immune and inflammatory response.
In Russia it has been used in contexts including stroke recovery and cognitive complaints. The N-acetyl amidated variant sold as N-Acetyl Semax Amidate is a modified form marketed as more stable — a chemically reasonable claim with no independent clinical comparison behind it.
Selank
Selank is a synthetic analogue of tuftsin, a fragment of an immunoglobulin. Research describes anxiolytic effects without the sedation and dependence associated with benzodiazepines, alongside effects on immune signalling.
The anxiolytic framing is what drives most interest in it. The evidence base is the same shape as Semax's: real published work, largely from one national research tradition, thinly replicated elsewhere.
The nasal route
Both are most often sold as nasal sprays rather than injectables, which changes the practical picture in ways worth noting.
Concentration still matters. A spray delivers a metered volume; the amount of peptide in it depends entirely on how the solution was made up.
Preservative still matters. A multi-use nasal bottle is repeatedly opened. The same beyond-use thinking applies as for a punctured vial.
Absorption is variable. Nasal delivery depends on mucosal condition, technique, and formulation — more variable than a subcutaneous injection.

Frequently asked questions
Can Semax and Selank be used together?
They are frequently discussed as a pair on the grounds that their proposed mechanisms differ. No controlled study establishes that combining them outperforms either alone.
Why is the research hard to evaluate?
Much of it is published in Russian-language journals and has not been independently replicated in Western trials. That is not evidence the findings are wrong, but it is a real limitation on how confidently they can be read.
Is the nasal spray form better?
It is the form most used in the original research, which is a reasonable argument for it. It is also the more variable route in terms of absorption.
