Cosmetic peptides are among the better-evidenced active ingredients in skincare, and their labels are close to unreadable without a key. An INCI list showing "palmitoyl tripeptide-1, palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7, acetyl hexapeptide-8" tells most buyers nothing at all.

There are four families worth knowing, and they do different things.

The first two are the ones to distinguish. Signal peptides aim to build; neuropeptides aim to relax. They address different visible problems — texture and firmness versus expression lines — and buying the wrong family for your concern is the most common mismatch.

What the evidence looks like

A 2026 review in Facial Plastic Surgery covers emerging peptide applications in aesthetics, and a 2025 review in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences examines acetyl hexapeptide-8 specifically in terms of skin permeability and efficacy.

Permeability is the recurring theme, and the central problem. A peptide has to cross the stratum corneum to reach the cells it signals. Larger and more charged peptides do this poorly, which is why formulation — not just the ingredient list — determines whether anything happens.

This is why concentration alone is a poor guide. A high concentration of a peptide that does not penetrate is worth less than a modest concentration in a formulation designed to deliver it. It is also why a bare INCI list cannot tell you whether a product works.

Position in the ingredient list matters more than the name. Ingredients are listed in descending order of concentration down to 1%. A peptide appearing after the fragrance and preservatives is present in trace amounts.

Order and compatibility both matter, and one pairing is genuine chemistry rather than a marketing rule.

Realistic expectations

  1. Timeline is months, not weeks. Matrix remodeling is slow. A four-week assessment is not informative.

  2. Effects are modest. Cosmetic peptides are not comparable to retinoids or in-clinic procedures.

  3. Sunscreen outperforms all of them for preventing visible ageing, and is the highest-value step in any routine.

  4. Consistency beats concentration. Daily use of a moderate product beats sporadic use of a strong one.

  5. Photograph consistently if tracking — same lighting, time of day and angle, or the comparison is meaningless.
