5-Amino-1MQ: An Enzyme Inhibitor Sold as a Peptide
5-Amino-1MQ is a small molecule that blocks a single enzyme. The mouse data behind it are real and specific — and there is no human trial at all.

5-Amino-1MQ is not a peptide either. It is a small molecule — a quinolinium compound — that inhibits a single enzyme, nicotinamide N-methyltransferase, usually abbreviated NNMT.
Unlike most compounds sold in this category, the research behind it is narrow and specific rather than sprawling. That makes it easier to assess honestly.
Not an approved drug. 5-Amino-1MQ has no approved human indication in the US, EU, or UK and no established human dose. It is sold for laboratory research only, and nothing here is dosing guidance.
What NNMT does
NNMT methylates nicotinamide, which is a precursor in the NAD+ salvage pathway. When NNMT is highly active, more nicotinamide is diverted down the methylation route and less is available for NAD+ synthesis.
Inhibiting NNMT is therefore proposed to leave more nicotinamide available for NAD+ production — which connects it directly to the NAD+ discussion, though by a completely different route. One supplies the molecule; the other tries to stop it being consumed.
NNMT expression is elevated in adipose tissue in obesity, which is the observation the whole approach rests on.
What the mouse research found
The foundational work reported that selective, membrane-permeable NNMT inhibitors reversed diet-induced obesity in mice. That is a specific, meaningful result, published in a peer-reviewed pharmacology journal.
Three things about it are worth stating plainly:
It is mice. Diet-induced obesity in a mouse model is a standard system, and results in it frequently fail to transfer to humans.
It is a class result. The work concerns NNMT inhibitors as a class, of which 5-Amino-1MQ is one example.
There is no human trial. No published human dose-ranging or efficacy study exists.
This is the cleanest example on this site of a compound with a coherent mechanism, a real published result, and a complete absence of human data. Those three things are entirely compatible, and recognising that is most of what critical reading requires.
It is oral, not injected
The compound was designed to be membrane-permeable and orally active — that permeability was the point of the medicinal chemistry. It is supplied as capsules or powder rather than a lyophilised vial.
So none of the reconstitution arithmetic applies, and neither does the bacteriostatic water handling that dominates injectable compounds.
Reading the marketing
Listings typically describe 5-Amino-1MQ as a "fat loss peptide". Both halves of that are wrong: it is not a peptide, and no human evidence establishes fat loss.
What is true is narrower and still interesting — a selective inhibitor of an enzyme that is upregulated in obese adipose tissue, with a supporting mouse result. That is a reasonable thing to be curious about and not a demonstrated effect in people.
