Abaloparatide has an FDA-approved human dosage as Tymlos: 80 mcg once daily by subcutaneous injection into the area around the navel, for postmenopausal women with osteoporosis at high risk for fracture and to increase bone density in men with osteoporosis at high risk. The label says safety and efficacy have not been evaluated beyond 2 years, and use for more than 2 years in a lifetime is not recommended.

Where sources disagree

  • Abaloparatide is an analogue of PTHrP(1-34), parathyroid hormone-related peptide. It is not teriparatide, and the two labels set different doses (80 mcg and 20 mcg daily) and different limits on treatment length.
  • The label lists osteosarcoma under Warnings and Precautions and says to avoid abaloparatide in people at higher baseline risk, such as those with open growth plates, Paget's disease, bone metastases or skeletal cancer, or prior radiation to the skeleton. It also warns about orthostatic hypotension (the first doses are given where the person can sit or lie down), hypercalcaemia and severe allergic reactions.
  • The licensed product is a prefilled pen of 3120 mcg in 1.56 mL that delivers 30 doses of 80 mcg in 40 microlitres each. Research-labelled abaloparatide powder vials are not this product, and the label does not describe them.
