Peptide Supplements: What Is Actually in the Bottle
Two completely different product categories share the word "peptide". Telling them apart is most of what a buyer needs to know.

“Peptide supplement” describes two product categories that share a word and almost nothing else. One is a regulated food supplement sold in tubs. The other is an unapproved research compound sold in vials. Confusing them is the source of most bad decisions in this space.

A vendor selling both categories on one site is the most common source of confusion. A tub of collagen peptides next to a vial of BPC-157 implies they belong to the same product class. They do not, and the vial carries a research-use-only designation meaning it is not for human or veterinary use.
Collagen peptides — the one with human trials
Hydrolysed collagen is the best-evidenced product in the oral category, and unusually for this field it has randomised placebo-controlled human trials. A 2025 double-blind, placebo-controlled study in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology examined sustained effects of bioactive collagen peptides on skin health.
Effects are modest, and measured — skin elasticity and hydration parameters rather than dramatic change.
Dose is in grams, typically 2.5–10 g daily, which is a different order of magnitude from injectable peptides entirely.
The mechanism is debated. Collagen is digested into amino acids and small peptides like any protein; the proposed mechanism is that specific di- and tripeptides survive and act as signals rather than that collagen is absorbed intact.
It is a protein source regardless — which is not nothing, and is often the simplest explanation.

Why most peptides cannot be oral
The digestive system is built to break peptides down. That is its function, and it is very good at it.
Stomach acid begins denaturation immediately.
Pepsin, trypsin and chymotrypsin cleave peptide bonds specifically.
Intestinal peptidases break down what survives.
Absorption favours single amino acids and very short fragments.
First-pass hepatic metabolism removes much of what does get through.
This is why injectable peptides are injectable. It is not a delivery preference — it is that oral administration would destroy them. An "oral BPC-157" claim is a claim that a pentadecapeptide survives all five of the steps above, which requires evidence rather than a capsule.

Reading a supplement label

The proprietary blend is the one that matters most. If a product lists a blend total but not per-ingredient quantities, you cannot tell whether the studied ingredient is present at the studied dose or as a trace. That is usually the point of the format.
What the categories share
Only one thing usefully transfers between them: the burden of verifying what you have. For supplements that means third-party certification such as NSF or Informed Sport. For research peptides it means a batch-specific certificate of analysis with mass spectrometry.
