How much bacteriostatic water to add — why there isn't one right answer
Extremely common question, phrased as though there's a correct number. There isn't — it's a choice with trade-offs.
**What adding more diluent gets you:** a more dilute solution, so a given mass occupies more volume and lands further along the syringe barrel. Easier to measure precisely, more forgiving of small errors.
**What adding less gets you:** a more concentrated solution, smaller draw volumes, and the vial lasts more entries before it's empty.
**The constraints:** - The vial has a physical capacity. - Very small draws are hard to measure accurately — a fraction of a unit is not a meaningful measurement on a standard syringe. - More entries into one vial means more contamination opportunities over its life.
So the sensible framing is: choose a volume that puts your typical draw somewhere legible on the syringe, given the vial size and how long you expect it to last.
What makes the question feel harder than it is: people search for the number rather than the reasoning, find a number that was correct for someone else's vial size and draw, and inherit an error.
