# Eptifibatide

Eptifibatide is an FDA-approved glycoprotein IIb in the Platelet Glycoprotein Inhibitor class. Eptifibatide contains a KGD sequence modelled on the RGD motif that fibrinogen uses to engage platelet glycoprotein IIb/IIIa. By occupying that receptor reversibly it prevents fibrinogen and von Willebrand factor cross-linking of platelets, blocking the final common step of platelet aggregation.

Cyclic heptapeptide platelet aggregation inhibitor approved for acute coronary syndrome and for patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention.

## Classification

- Type: FDA-approved glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitor
- Mechanism class: Platelet Glycoprotein Inhibitor
- Development stage: Approved product
- Regulatory class: FDA-approved medicine

## Mechanism

Eptifibatide contains a KGD sequence modelled on the RGD motif that fibrinogen uses to engage platelet glycoprotein IIb/IIIa. By occupying that receptor reversibly it prevents fibrinogen and von Willebrand factor cross-linking of platelets, blocking the final common step of platelet aggregation. Its short half-life means platelet function recovers within hours of stopping the infusion.

## Properties

- Molecular formula: C35H49N11O9S2
- Molecular weight: 832 g/mol
- Half-life: About 2.5 hours (plasma elimination half-life)
- Studied routes: Intravenous

## Evidence

- Evidence level: FDA Approved
- Highest documented: Regulatory review (FDA label)
- Human trials: 0
- Controlled human trials: 0
- Preclinical sources: 0

Each step shows whether the sources Peptide Library has reviewed include that kind of research. Counts are reviewed sources, not every study ever published. Reviews and programme summaries that describe human use are shown as "reported", not as trials, and registered trials without published results are listed but not counted. A higher step means research has progressed further; it does not mean a compound works better or is safer. Compounds whose evidence has not been reviewed yet show "Not reviewed" instead of a guess.

### Studies

1. Eptifibatide injection (Slate Run Pharmaceuticals) — FDA prescribing information, DailyMed. Regulatory label (FDA), human. Population: Adults with acute coronary syndrome managed medically or with PCI. Indicated to decrease the rate of a combined endpoint of death or new myocardial infarction [Source](https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/drugInfo.cfm?setid=2ab98ecd-c578-4032-a3d5-ae14d58d86a7)
2. Eptifibatide injection (Slate Run Pharmaceuticals) — FDA prescribing information, DailyMed. Regulatory label (FDA), human. Population: Adults undergoing PCI. Indicated to decrease the rate of a combined endpoint of death, new myocardial infarction or need for urgent intervention [Source](https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/drugInfo.cfm?setid=2ab98ecd-c578-4032-a3d5-ae14d58d86a7)

## Safety

Human safety basis: FDA prescribing information

## Regulatory status

Eptifibatide is an FDA-approved product for specific labelled indications. Approval does not extend to the research contexts described on this page, and approved products are prescription medicines.

- FDA status: Approved
- Availability: Prescription-Only

## Frequently asked questions

### What is Eptifibatide?

Cyclic heptapeptide platelet aggregation inhibitor approved for acute coronary syndrome and for patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention.

### How does Eptifibatide work?

Eptifibatide contains a KGD sequence modelled on the RGD motif that fibrinogen uses to engage platelet glycoprotein IIb/IIIa. By occupying that receptor reversibly it prevents fibrinogen and von Willebrand factor cross-linking of platelets, blocking the final common step of platelet aggregation.

### Is Eptifibatide FDA approved?

Yes. Eptifibatide is approved by the FDA, and approved products are prescription medicines. Approval is always for specific indications studied in clinical trials, so an approved status does not mean the compound is approved for every use it is discussed for. Research-chemical material sold under the same name is not the approved product.

### What peptides are similar to Eptifibatide?

Compounds most often compared with Eptifibatide include Angiotensin II, Cetrorelix, Corticorelin and Cosyntropin. They are grouped by shared mechanism or research area rather than by equivalence, and their regulatory status and evidence base differ.
