# Peptides for Men: What Each Category Is Actually Studied For

The peptides marketed to men span five unrelated categories, and the evidence quality between them varies more than the marketing suggests.

**“Peptides for men” is a marketing category, not a pharmacological one. **The compounds sold under it span five unrelated mechanisms, and the evidence behind them ranges from approved drugs with full labels to compounds that have never been given to a human under study conditions.

Sorting them by mechanism makes the difference visible.

## 1. Hormonal axis

| **Compound** | **Mechanism** | **Status** |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Kisspeptin-10 | Upstream stimulus to GnRH release | Research; human studies exist |
| Gonadorelin | GnRH itself | Approved in some forms |
| Enclomiphene | SERM — not a peptide | Not approved as a standalone |
| hCG | LH-like activity | Approved for specific indications |

This is the category with genuine recent human data. Chronic subcutaneous kisspeptin-10 has been shown to stimulate gonadotropin secretion over twelve days in healthy men, and a 2025 meta-analysis examined clomiphene and enclomiphene for male hypogonadism.

> **Hormonal axis manipulation is the category where self-experimentation carries the clearest risk. **The HPG axis is a feedback system — intervening at one point changes the others, and the effects on fertility, endogenous production and downstream hormones are not observable without bloodwork. This is a category for a clinician and a lab panel, not a vial.

Covered in more depth in the [peptides for testosterone guide](https://peptidelibrary.app/blog/peptides-for-testosterone).

## 2. Growth hormone axis

| **Compound** | **Mechanism** | **Status** |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Tesamorelin | GHRH analogue | Approved — HIV-associated lipodystrophy only |
| Sermorelin | GHRH 1-29 | Formerly approved; withdrawn from US market |
| CJC-1295 | Long-acting GHRH analogue | Never approved |
| Ipamorelin | Selective GH secretagogue | Never approved |
| MK-677 | Oral GH secretagogue — not a peptide | Never approved |

Tesamorelin is the only one with a current US approval, and its indication is narrow and specific. The distinction between GHRH analogues and GH secretagogues is covered in [ipamorelin vs sermorelin](https://peptidelibrary.app/blog/ipamorelin-vs-sermorelin).

## 3. Metabolic

| **Compound** | **Mechanism** | **Status** |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Semaglutide | GLP-1 agonist | Approved |
| Tirzepatide | GIP/GLP-1 agonist | Approved |
| Retatrutide | GIP/GLP-1/glucagon agonist | Phase 3 |
| AOD-9604 | hGH fragment 176-191 | Preclinical |
| 5-Amino-1MQ | NNMT inhibitor — not a peptide | Preclinical |

**This category contains the two best-evidenced compounds on the entire list. **Semaglutide and tirzepatide have full labels, large trial programmes and ongoing pharmacovigilance — a different tier of evidence from everything else here.

## 4. Repair and recovery

| **Compound** | **Mechanism** | **Status** |
| --- | --- | --- |
| BPC-157 | Pentadecapeptide; rodent tissue repair literature | Preclinical |
| TB-500 | Thymosin beta-4 fragment | Preclinical |
| Wolverine stack | BPC-157 + TB-500 | Unstudied as a combination |

The BPC-157 rodent literature is genuinely extensive and genuinely rodent. The few human studies are small, and none shows that it works. See the [joint pain guide](https://peptidelibrary.app/blog/peptides-for-joint-pain) and [BPC-157 dosage guide](https://peptidelibrary.app/blog/bpc-157-dosage).

## 5. Sexual health

| **Compound** | **Mechanism** | **Status** |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Bremelanotide (PT-141) | Melanocortin agonist | Approved as Vyleesi — for premenopausal women |
| Melanotan II | Melanocortin agonist | Not approved; subject of FDA warnings |
| Oxytocin | Nonapeptide hormone | Approved for obstetric use |

> **PT-141 is approved, but not for men. **Vyleesi’s indication is hypoactive sexual desire disorder in premenopausal women. Use in men is off-label and outside the population the trials studied — an important distinction given how it is marketed. See the [PT-141 dosage guide](https://peptidelibrary.app/blog/pt-141-dosage).

## How the evidence tiers compare

| **Tier** | **Compounds** | **What exists** |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Approved drugs | Semaglutide, tirzepatide, tesamorelin, PT-141 | Labels, trials, pharmacovigilance |
| Human studies, no approval | Kisspeptin-10, enclomiphene, retatrutide | Published human data |
| Preclinical only | BPC-157, TB-500, CJC-1295, ipamorelin, AOD-9604 | Animal or cell culture |
| Unstudied combinations | Wolverine stack, KLOW, blends | Component data only |

**The gap between the first and third rows is larger than any difference within them. **A compound with an approved label and one with a rodent literature are not two points on a scale — they are different kinds of knowledge.

## What to establish before anything else

1. **Baseline bloodwork, **particularly for anything touching the hormonal axis.
2. **Which tier the compound sits in, **using the table above.
3. **Whether it is a peptide at all. **MK-677, enclomiphene and 5-Amino-1MQ are not.
4. **Whether an approved alternative exists. **For metabolic and GH-axis goals it frequently does, with a label attached. See the [FDA-approved peptides list](https://peptidelibrary.app/blog/fda-approved-peptides).
5. **A batch-specific COA **for anything bought as a research compound.
